Join us as we chase the Great Sandhill Crane Migration in Kearney Nebraska! An estimated 600,000 sandhill cranes stop over on the Platte River creating one of the true wildlife spectacles of North America! On this trip expect to see 40-50 different species of birds with many of them in huge flocks as they migrate. We will have a great chance to see other wildlife such as coyote, red fox, mule deer & white-tailed deer. This tour includes 4 days touring, 3 nights lodging, snacks/refreshments, airport pickup/dropoff in Omaha, use of binoculars/spotting scopes, crane viewing blinds, prairie chicken blinds & more!

Itinerary

DAY 1

Guests will fly in throughout the day and we will pick you up and transfer you to the hotel. We have planned a beginning-of-tour dinner to meet and greet everyone! Downtown Omaha is a reminder of the Midwest’s railroad past and baseball pastime.

DAY 2

Today we head out to visit the Lewis and Clark Museum on the Missouri River. After walking the bridge we head on to Grand Island for lunch and walking the Crane Trust property. Later in the evening we will be in the Crane Trust viewing blinds for our first evening of cranes coming in to roost! You will see one of nature’s last great migrations on earth! After the crane viewing we will check into our hotel and have a group dinner to prepare for our early day tomorrow for prairie chicken viewing.

DAY 3

Early wake-up for prairie chicken viewing! We will view prairie chicken leks (breeding areas) as males compete for breeding rights to pass on the next generation. Expect lots of action early as male prairie chickens compete for breeding dominance at sunrise. After prairie chicken viewing we head back to the hotel for coffee and breakfast. Then we can tour the Archway Museum to see how the first pioneers traveled over the Oregon Trail to get to the American west. After the Archway Museum guests will have a choice of downtime at the hotel or area bird viewing of cranes in the corn fields and local area. We will have an early dinner, then head to Rowe Sanctuary for an evening of incoming cranes to their roost on the Platte River.

DAY 4: MORNING CRANE VIEWING & DEPARTURE

 Expect to see one of earth’s most spectacular wildlife events as thousands of sandhill cranes take flight in the beautiful Platte River sunrise! We will watch this scene unfold from the Audubon Society viewing blinds on Rowe Sanctuary. After morning crane viewing and brunch we will be off to Omaha for goodbyes until the next BrushBuck adventure!
